Unique Words in the English Dictionary

Some words in the English dictionary are truly unique. English words found in the English dictionary aren’t always of English or American origin. Some words which were included were derived from the different languages from around the world. Here’s a collection of some of the most peculiar words which are included in the English dictionary.

Shepherd

As a general rule, words with “ph” are pronounced “f” like philosophy, epitaph, phase, etc… but the word shepherd is an exemption to the rule. The “ph” in the word is not pronounced “f” but “p”. Why? Because the word shepherd was derived from two separate words – sheep + herd.

Boondocks

The word “boondocks” has nothing to do with docks or boons. This English word which was included in the English dictionary means uncivilized or backward areas, out of the way.  It was derived from the Tagalog word “bundok” which literally means mountain.

Intercontinentalizationalism

The longest word in the English dictionary is the word “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovlocanoconiosis”. It is the same as silicosis in medial dictionaries. It is the longest word in any of the major English language dictionaries. It is a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano. It is indeed the longest but very hard to spell and remember. Another very long English word is “intercontinentalizationalism” but it is one of the easiest to spell remember. The word has 12 syllables and 28 letters.

Bourgeoisie

This unique word of French origin is one of the English words included in the dictionary with an unusual pronunciation is Bourgeoisie. This peculiar word is the middle class society in France .The proper pronunciation is “bŏŏr zhwä zÄ“”.

Epididymis

The usual way to create the plural form of a word is to add s such as table= tables, flower = flowers. If a word ends with is, in order to form its plural, is is change to es such as axis = axes, parenthesis = parentheses, synthesis to syntheses and many others. But the word epididymis doesn’t follow the same rule. It has a unique plural form which is epididymides. Epididymis is a part of the male reproductive organ.

Bade

Bade should have been pronounced like fade, wade, jade and made but it is not. Bade, which is the past tense of the word bid, is pronounce “bad”.

Genre

Genre means sort or style. It also means a class of painting or other arts portraying everyday life. It is pronounce “zhän’rÉ™”
