As an English teacher I would suggest that it is not so mush the grammar as the pronunciation. Take for example: bough, though, hough, through, cough, dough, enough, sough, tough, .....enough said. more

An English (as opposed to American) explanation would be someone who prepared animal horn for other uses, such as hornbooks and lanterns etc. It probably meant the same thing in the Colonies though. more
